How to Plan a Complete Sauna LED Strip Lighting System

Sauna LED Strip Lighting Guide

A dependable sauna lighting system requires more than waterproof LED strip. Learn how to coordinate the strip, power supply, controller, wiring, connections and mounting before installation.

Sauna LED lighting is often treated as a simple waterproofing problem. In practice, a dependable installation requires more than an IP-rated strip. The lighting must tolerate elevated temperatures, repeated heating and cooling cycles and moisture—and the power supply, controller, wiring, connections and mounting method must all work together.

A well-planned system starts with the desired lighting effect and the physical layout of the sauna. Once those decisions are made, you can select the correct strip, calculate power requirements, match the controller and conductor count and determine how every run will be mounted and connected.

This guide walks through that process using LEDSupply’s 24V Element Series sauna LED strip lights. The same planning approach is also valuable for contractors, sauna manufacturers, millwork shops, lighting designers and installers specifying other high-temperature linear lighting projects.

Why Standard Waterproof LED Strip Is Not Enough

Water resistance and temperature tolerance describe two different product requirements. An IP rating addresses protection against the entry of solids and water under defined test conditions. It does not, by itself, establish how much heat an LED strip, its circuit board, adhesive and protective housing can tolerate.

A sauna combines several difficult operating conditions:

  • Elevated air and surface temperatures
  • Humidity and occasional direct moisture
  • Repeated heating and cooling cycles
  • Wood surfaces that may make adhesive mounting less dependable
  • Confined installation spaces with limited access after construction

LEDSupply’s high-temperature Element Series strips are fully encapsulated for IP68 environmental protection and have an operating range from -30°C to 90°C (-22°F to 194°F). This does not eliminate the need for careful placement: the strip should still be kept away from direct heater exposure and any localized location that may exceed its maximum rating.

Important: “Waterproof” does not automatically mean “sauna-rated.”

Confirm both the environmental rating and operating-temperature range. Also evaluate the housing, wiring, terminations, mounting method and location of the power and control equipment.

Step 1: Choose the Lighting Effect

The lighting effect is the first system decision because it determines much more than color. It also determines the strip construction, controller, number of conductors, connector and cut interval.

Comparison of Fixed White, Tunable White, RGB and RGBW sauna LED strip lighting

Fixed White

Fixed White sauna strip is the simplest and most common choice for comfortable indirect illumination. Choose one color temperature—such as warm 2700K or 3000K—and use an optional compatible PWM dimmer when brightness adjustment is needed.

Tunable White

Tunable White sauna strip adjusts from warm 2700K to cool 6500K. It is useful when the desired atmosphere changes throughout the day or when the same room needs both relaxing warm light and brighter, cooler illumination. A two-channel tunable-white controller is required.

RGB

RGB sauna strip combines red, green and blue channels to produce custom colors and dynamic effects. It can mix an approximate white appearance, but it does not include a dedicated white-light channel. Use RGB when decorative color is the primary goal.

RGBW

RGBW sauna strip adds a dedicated 3000K Warm White channel to RGB. It is the most flexible option when the installation needs both color-changing scenes and useful everyday white illumination.

Step 2: Plan the Strip Locations and Run Lengths

Sauna lighting is usually most comfortable when the light source is concealed and the illuminated surface is visible. Indirect placement reduces glare, hides individual LEDs and integrates the lighting into the woodwork.

Common locations include:

  • Beneath upper and lower benches
  • Behind backrests
  • Under toe kicks
  • Inside coves and recessed architectural details
  • Along perimeter details where the strip remains concealed

Before ordering, sketch each separate run and record its length, starting point, ending point and feed direction. Identify corners, gaps and locations where wire must pass through the millwork. This is especially important for Tunable White, RGB and RGBW systems because their additional conductors make field wiring more involved.

The maximum continuous run for these products is 32.8 feet. Longer installations should be divided into separate parallel runs back to the appropriate power or control point to reduce voltage drop and maintain more consistent output.

Step 3: Plan All Five Parts of the System

The LED strip is only one component. A complete sauna lighting project requires five coordinated decisions.

  1. Sauna-rated LED strip: Select the lighting effect, color temperature, total footage, individual run lengths and required cut locations.
  2. 24V constant-voltage power supply: Calculate the connected strip load and add appropriate capacity headroom. Install the power supply outside the sauna.
  3. Compatible dimmer or controller: Match the control type and channel count to Fixed White, Tunable White, RGB or RGBW strip.
  4. Wiring, connections and terminations: Match the conductor count, connector style, wire length and sealing method to the selected strip and installation.
  5. Mounting and light management: Plan mechanical clips and any compatible channel or lens required to support the strip and produce the desired effect.

Step 4: Size the 24V Power Supply

Power-supply sizing starts with the total connected strip length. Multiply the total footage by the strip’s wattage per foot, then add at least 20% capacity so the power supply is not operated continuously at its maximum rating.

Strip load: total connected feet × watts per foot

Recommended minimum power-supply capacity: strip load × 1.20

Also confirm that the selected dimmer or controller can carry the total load and current at 24V. When multiple runs share a controller, use the combined connected load. The power supply and controller should both be located outside the sauna unless a specific component is explicitly rated for that environment.

Step 5: Match the Controller and Wiring

The number of conductors increases with the number of independently controlled lighting channels:

Plan conductor count before any cable is routed through finished walls or millwork. Wire size depends on current, total distance and the acceptable voltage drop. Longer distances may require heavier wire, shorter feed distances or multiple parallel feeds.

A standard single-channel dimmer cannot independently manage Tunable White, RGB or RGBW channels. Use the controller designed for the selected strip type and verify its voltage, channel count, current capacity and connection method. Step 6: Mount the Strip for Heat, Moisture and Serviceability

The strip includes adhesive backing, but elevated temperature and unfinished wood surfaces can reduce the reliability of adhesive-only mounting. Mechanical mounting clips provide additional support and should be incorporated where appropriate.

During installation:

  • Keep the strip away from direct heater exposure.
  • Avoid surfaces or enclosed spaces that may exceed the strip’s 90°C maximum operating temperature.
  • Use indirect placement to reduce glare and conceal individual LEDs.
  • Provide service access to wiring transitions and terminations.
  • Do not place the power supply or controller inside the sauna unless it is specifically rated for that location.
  • Confirm that channels, lenses, fasteners, adhesives and cables installed inside the sauna are appropriate for the environment.

Sauna construction and electrical requirements vary. Follow the sauna manufacturer’s instructions, applicable electrical codes and the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. Use a qualified electrical professional where required.

Step 7: Understand Cutting and IP68 Protection

The factory strip is encapsulated to provide environmental protection, but cutting changes the original seal at the cut end. The Fixed White and Tunable White strips can be cut every two inches; RGB and RGBW strips can be cut every four inches.

Only cut at the marked cut points. Any field-cut end or connection must receive an appropriate termination and sealing treatment wherever environmental protection is required. Use connectors specifically matched to the finished 10mm strip width and the correct conductor count.

Reduce field work when the installation is difficult to access

Confirm these items before ordering

  • The selected strip is rated for the expected temperature and environmental conditions.
  • The lighting effect—Fixed White, Tunable White, RGB or RGBW—is finalized.
  • Every strip run, corner, gap, feed point and cut location is documented.
  • The power supply is sized for the complete load plus headroom.
  • The controller matches the strip type, voltage, channels and connected load.
  • The wire and connectors match the required conductor count.
  • Power and control equipment will be installed outside the sauna.
  • Field cuts and connections have an appropriate sealing plan.
  • The mounting method will remain secure on the selected surface.
  • Installation follows manufacturer requirements and applicable electrical codes.
