LED are tiny light bulbs that produce light through a chip (the semiconductor), rather than a filament, which is used in incandescent light bulbs. Filaments work by heat. When you turn the light on, the filament heats up and in turn lights the bulb. In the case of LED components, light is generated when voltage is applied to the chip within the bulb, causing a current to flow between the positive and negative sides of the semiconductor material or chip. LED is a great alternative to incandescent light technology for a number of reasons. Firstly, LED components last longer than incandescent light sources. In an incandescent light bulb the filament wears out, causing the bulb to blow. In the case of LED components, such as LED light bulbs, there is no filament to burn out which means they last longer. And when it comes to the household light bulb that is great news because we all know how frustrating blown light bulbs can be.
LED components are much more efficient and environmentally friendly than the incandescent light bulb. The reasons for this are two-fold. Firstly the nature of LED light bulbs means that they can be made of a much more durable plastic than incandescent bulbs (because they do not need heat to be lit). This reduces waste as LED components need to be replaced less often. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, LED demands less electricity to create light. Again this relates to the fact that it does not have to be heated up first to create light. What is also very exciting about LED components is that their applications are far more extensive than incandescent lights and the use of LED is something we will begin to see more of over time.
