Household Led Light Bulb
LED or Light Emitting Diode is a very small light bulb. Ordinary light bulbs have a filament which produces heat and then light; touch an ordinary light bulb that is switched on and you will find that it heats up through use. LED's, like a household LED light bulb on the other hand do not have a filament. So how are they illuminated?
LED's produce light through the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material. In a LED light bulb this semiconductor material is a chip located in the center of the bulb. The chip has a positive and negative side separated by a junction. When sufficient voltage is applied to the chip a current can flow between the two regions and create light. In the case of a LED household light bulb voltage is applied the chip by a simple flick of the light switch which in turn, lights the bulb.
In basic terms LED is an alternative technology to the incandescent lamps we are all used to, but you may be wondering what the advantage of one over the other is. Firstly we all know that light bulbs burn out. It is actually the filament that burns out and because LED's don't have a filament they last a lot longer. Furthermore the plastic light bulb used in LED light bulbs is much stronger and longer lasting than incandescent light bulbs.
However, the main advantage of LED's and a LED household light bulb in particular is the efficiency of it. As we discussed an incandescent bulb is lit by a filament. The filament produces light when it is warmed and this requires energy, but its energy that is wasted as it produces light and heat and unless you are also using the lamp as a heater, you don't need heat. An LED does not heat up to the same extent as an incandescent bulb does which means a greater proportion of the energy being used goes to generating light.
So what does all of this mean; in simple terms it means that LED lights demand less electricity than incandescent lights which makes them more efficient and thereby more environmentally friendly. LED light, like a household LED light bulb is also more durable and longer lasting, which again makes them a much more earth friendly alternative than incandescent light bulbs. Finally the application for LED light is far more extensive and it's definitely a technology of the future. LED Supply is an online supplier of all your LED needs.
